What sizes do you stock?
Common sizes: 3m x 200 x 100mm and 2.4m × 200 × 100 mm (and 1.2m half-sleepers on request.) Check the product page for live size/grade options.
New vs reclaimed—what’s best for a garden?
- New, pressure-treated: consistent size, longer life, cleaner for raised beds & borders.
- Reclaimed: rustic look; may have residues/irregularities—great for landscaping, not for veg beds.
Are the sleepers pressure-treated and child/pet safe?
Our treated softwood sleepers are UC3/UC4 outdoor rated and creosote-free as standard (suitable for family gardens). For edible planting, line the inside of beds with membrane.
How many sleepers do I need for a raised bed?
Per layer: divide bed length by 2.4m (or 1.2m) and round up. Typical North East back-garden bed: 2.4 × 1.2 m uses 2 + 2 sleepers per layer.
Can I cut sleepers at home?
Yes—use a circular saw/recip saw. Seal fresh cuts with end-grain preservative.
What fixings should I use?
For walls/steps: 150–250 mm landscaping screws or timberlock; for ground anchoring: rebar/posts in concrete. Always check levels on sloping Tyne & Wear plots.
Do I need planning permission for a sleeper wall?
Low borders are fine. For retaining walls over ~1 m or near boundaries/highways, check your local council (Newcastle, North Tyneside, Durham, etc.).
How long do treated sleepers last outdoors?
Typically 8–15+ years depending on ground contact, drainage, and maintenance.
Can you place the sleepers on my drive?
We need firm, flat ground. If streets are narrow (common in terraces/back lanes), we’ll drop kerbside.
